Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) has upgraded its cloud platform to support additional computing services. Reports claim that Google Cloud Functions, the latest Google Cloud Platform offering, allows developers to upload JavaScript code snippets. It’s still in Alpha phase and can be accessed by those customers who have whitelisted Google accounts. Some of the computing services supported by Google Cloud Functions are Compute Engine, App Engine, and Container Engine.

Insights of Matter

The fact that triggered Google to include computing services on its cloud platform is nothing but their simplicity. Following fire-and-forget paradigm, developers can upload individual code snippets to the cloud, which are then hooked to a number of events at runtime. The biggest advantage of this model is that without any administrative overhead it offers no friction, low-touch deployment mechanism.

Microservices and serverless computing are taking the world to a new and advanced web-scale computing, and Google doesn’t want to leave any stone unturned to explore various opportunities attached to them.

Reports claim that Google Cloud Functions is an event-based, light-weight compute solution that helps the developers to create small functions, which can respond to various cloud events without managing a runtime environment or a server. It lends full support to JavaScript functions, which are executed within Node.js runtime environment. Developers don’t need to configure any virtual machine when using Google Cloud Functions.

Whenever a new document is uploaded to a Google Cloud Storage Bucket, Google Cloud Functions converts it into PDF format, and then uploads it to a different location. In case users upload high-resolution images to cloud storage, they are instantly converted into thumbnails, that too without using any image editing software. Such scanned documents or images can immediately be validated and sent to relevant parties without any delay.

It’s not the first time when a company has come up with serverless computing services. Before Google, Amazon had launched such services in the name of AWS Lambda. It has already become popular within first two years of launch. Following Amazon’s path, Google looks forward to making Google Cloud Functions a sought after serverless computing platform in the future.
